CMI Research: Trust Me, I’m a Manager

Posted by on Oct 29, 2014 in Business Growth, Change, Leadership, Monthly Newsletter, Strategy | 0 comments

Would you let your doctor treat you, if you found out that they did not have any training? Previous research by the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) showed that many people join an organisation, because of their reputation, but leave because of their experience of a ‘bad manager’. Yet every year British businesses let thousands of managers loose on their people, without equipping them with the skills that they need to be effective in management roles. The CMI’s Management 2020 Survey of over 2,000 managers working in the UK...

Selling: New Techniques or Snake-oil?

Posted by on Oct 29, 2014 in Business Growth, Change, Francis Christie News, Marketing, Sales | 0 comments

Some clients get excited about new techniques or new methods that will ‘solve all their problems’. I know of at least one company, where the directors dread the CEO’s next international flight. Why? Because he has a history of coming back to the office, throwing down the ‘in-flight’ magazine and saying ‘This looks like a great idea! Why don’t we try this?’ The world of coaches and consultants is often marked with excitement about the ‘next big thing’. I have met several consultants...

Vote for Jo Pavey!

Jo Pavey gets my vote. She is an inspiration to many working mums. She is also an inspiration to me as a working dad. What we share is our experience of struggling with balancing the demands of work with the demands of having a young family. She is, I think, an inspiration for all of us. I reached a critical cross-roads in my career. In one dimension, I was very successful and had achieved business goals that were very important to me. In another dimension, I was away from home so much that I was conscious I was ‘loosing it’ with...

Ready To Go?

Posted by on Aug 5, 2014 in Francis Christie News | 0 comments

Are you ‘Ready to Go’, if life presents you with a great opportunity today? Are you thinking ‘This is it!  This is the day that could change my life?’ I have loved the Commonwealth Games for the examples of athletes who took the opportunities that life offered them ‘on the day’. These are the moments that had me on my feet roaring encouragement, shouting at the top of my voice and willing them on to cross the finishing line. Yet everything that preceded that race, said ‘don’t do it!’ Their...

World Cup Penalty Shoot-out: Would You Volunteer? Volunteering to take a penalty is often the defining moment of a player’s career. Can you carry the weight of a nation’s expectations on your shoulders? If you succeed, you are a national hero. Fail and you may be remembered for ‘all the wrong reasons’. Or will you? When Ron Vlaar walked up to take the first penalty for the Netherlands, in the World Cup semi-final against Argentina, the stress was evident in his body language. He did not look confident. He took it badly...

Jonny Wilkinson – My Hero

Posted by on May 30, 2014 in Francis Christie News, Leadership, Learning & Development, Personal Development | 0 comments

Jonny Wilkinson was my hero. He crowned a magnificent career when he led Toulon to the ‘Top 14’ title by beating Castres in his final match as a professional player. The previous weekend, he led Toulon in crushing the Saracens by 23-6 in the final of the Heineken Cup. He kicked and played a fantastic game and contributed by scoring 13 points. He won our hearts with the ‘story-book’ finish in the final minutes of the 2003 Rugby World Cup Final in Australia. I can remember sitting with my friends, and gripping the edge...

In this issue…  Know Yourself and Know When To Go David Moyes Departure – a Failure of Leadership GrowthAccelerator: Where Ambitious Businesses Go To Grow Receiving the Francis Christie Newsletter Know Yourself and Know When To Go I met a Chief Executive recently who had just resigned from his post. He had implemented major change initiatives and significant programmes were still in progress. I expressed my surprise that he had decided to go. What he said was very revealing: “I know what I’m good at and, if I stayed, I’d want to...
